Need More Practice for Interviews

Fuck, why can’t I get the job I want with Environment Canada. Just as I predicted, I was shortlisted for a phone interview with them on Tuesday from Ottawa… this is my second interview with Environment Canada (first one in Vancouver last year). What can I say, my cover letter is that good when it comes to climate change issues.

However, I suck at interviews. Ottawa called and told me he was quite 'impressed' with the letter and got straight to the point. It went a lot smoother than the first one, mainly because I have more experience with interviews. Apparently, still not enough. I was nervous the whole time... managed to answer all the questions except what E10 was. He said it’s ethanol & alcohol based fuel... I replied “OH! It’s what they are using in Brazil.” We discussed it further... I think I redeemed myself nicely there. Robert and I even discussed it my last day in Tulsa... I just didn’t know the terminology.

Anyways, I guess my letter was not as ‘impressive’ as he thought it was, or else he would just give me the job. I didn’t get it... I came in third (not sure out of how many, last time there were 6 candidates). I’m pissed... I need more practice with interviews.

Now I got 4 more jobs I’m looking at. The first choice is with Fisheries and Oceans Canada in West Vancouver assisting Erin, a UBC PhD candidate, with her research aimed at reducing environmental contaminants in fish farms. It turns out that my friend Geoff works in the same lab with Erin and he’s been putting in a good word. So I hope it works out. If not, there’s a research position availabe in their downtown office, another one with Environment Canada dealing with species at risk and last job pertaining to what I did in Thailand… international development, human rights and governance. I’m confident one of these will work out.

Damnit, these are still government jobs and I hate their interviews... even thoough it is what I want. Praise my excellence you fools!!!

just keep at it Jay, you can only get better with time. At least you are able to impress with the cover letter, and are getting your foot in the door! Good luck with the others.

I know that you are frustrated and aggravated that things aren't going smoothly but maybe the perfect job just hasn't been offered yet.Keep interviewing and putting out letters and soon your'll find something.
